DDOT DIRECTOR UNVEILS FIRST OF NEW REHABBED BUSES

In these two TV news-clips from early Sept 1985, the first of the completely rehabbed buses that put the DDOT Director on the hot seat are displayed before the media.

In June of 1985, former DDOT Director Robert Polk came under fire from the Detroit City Council after he sent 60 older buses in need of repair to the Blitz Corp. of Chicago to be completely overhauled, before the Detroit City Council had even approved the contract.

Truck & Coach held a
media event to show-off the
first RTS (Rapid Transit
Series) bus fleet to roll off
the assembly line.
In May of 1978, SEMTA &
GMC unveiled the first five
D-DOT RTS coaches to the
media. Also, a sneak-peak
at the inner workings of the
wheel-chair lift on the RTS.

GRUMMAN-FLXIBLE "870"
CRACKED A-FRAME
PROBLEMS
In December of 1980, over
2,600 Grumman 870 buses
were taken out of service
across the country to repair
cracked A-frames. ABC
World News Tonight reports.
During the summer of
1978, the first wheel-chair
lift equipped RTS coach
was delivered to the Detroit
Department Of
Transportation (DDOT).
Beginning In June of 1978,
the first fleet of RTS (Rapid
Transit Series) Advanced
Design Buses began
operating along the streets
of Detroit.
In our video clip, Mr. Polk now proudly shows-off the first five of these coaches to the news media before the buses are placed back into service. The rehabs now sport a new paint job, new seats, new lighting, new engines, new exhaust systems and new brakes. This is the second of two videos featuring DDOT's attempt to improve bus service during the mid-'80s.
